Presentation of the Code@Youth Project and its results to the 70 students of the Postgraduate Degree program “Specialization in ICTs and Special Education – Psychopedagogy of Integration”

On Friday 13 October 2017, Dr. Athanasios Drigas, Director of Net Media Lab and Vice President of the postgraduate degree program “Specialization in ICTs and Special Education – Psychopedagogy of Integration”, which is co-organized with the University of Thrace, presented the results of the Code@Youth project to the 70 students of the program during one of his lectures.
In particular, he presented the e-learning platform that was developed in the framework of the project as well as the summer school that was organized and implemented between 26 June and 7 July 2017.

On Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October 2017, Net Media Lab of N.C.S.R. “Demokritos” organized its annual free seminar on “ICTs and Special Education” at the Main Auditorium of N.C.S.R. “Demokritos”, attracting over 1000 teachers, educators, psychologists, parents, researchers and students. The seminar took place three time over the course of the weekend.
Dr. Athanasios Drigas, Director of Net Media Lab had the opportunity to present the Code@Youth project and its results such as the e-learning platform and the summer school that took place between 26 June and 7 July 2017 to the audience.

On Tuesday 4 July 2017, Dr. Athanasios Drigas, Director of Net Media Lab of N.C.S.R. “Demokritos” presented the Code@Youth project and its results so far such as the e-learning platform during his annual speech at the 5th Hellenic Forum for Science, Technology and Innovation and the 52nd Summer School of N.C.S.R. “Demokritos”.
The 250 people that attended his speech at the Main Auditorium of N.C.S.R. “Demokritos”, comprised mostly of students aged 18-25 years old as well as researchers from various science fields.


From June 26 to July 7, 2017, the largest interdisciplinary research center in Greece, NCSR “Demokritos” and namely the Net Medial Lab of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications, organized Coding and Robotics Summer School for young people from 14 to 16 years of age. The Summer School was organized under the Erasmus + Program “Code and Youth: An Innovative programme in the Digital Era”.

The first ‘Summer Coding and Robotics School’ organised by CCS (Cyprus Computer Society) and Emphasys Centre, as part of the Erasmus + Code and Youth project which is coordinated by the Cyprus Computer Society lasted between the 26th of June and the 7th of July 2017.

The students who participated in the Summer Coding and Robotics school attended both courses during two intensive weeks.  The 1st week has been spent on Programming lessons and the 1nd on Robotics.  During the two weeks the students had the opportunity to visit Higher Institutions to receive information related to computing studies and jobs, ICT companies to get hands on experience and attend speaks of Career Counsellors.

Students have shown excellent interest during the coding and robotic lessons as well as the visits organised.

Our e-learning platform is online!

After the hard work in spring, finally Code and Youth partnership has released a unique and rich e-learning platform where students and teachers can work together to code! The platform has two main sections, one about robotics and one about coding.

It will implement the philosophy of open badges, electronic badges which can be issued by organisations, institutions or any entity to officially recognise specific competences. Open Badges are connected to an international alliance called Bologna Open Recognition Alliance, promoting universal and transparent recognition of competences.

Coding summer school about to come!

“A coding summer!”, I was already excited when I saw the first proposed idea of Code and Youth. Summer is often seen by students in Italy as a period when you simply switch off your brain, not really engaging yourself in something challenging, but maybe it’s the fault of our beautiful sea!

Making the story short, the project was approved and financed by the European Commission, and that dream started with our first meeting in Erfurt, in Germany, in November 2016. Well, we were still a bit away from the summer!

After quite a lot of effort, we have developed very interesting ideas and tools for our students. We met again in Cyprus and it has been great – long working and training days, but it was worth to the last second we were there.

The summer school is indeed now getting closer. Not many weeks ago we also received a sample from the amazing team of MeetEdison! So we could experiment some of its features, also to organise the activities with young people.

As the time goes by, we have also met the schools to explain our ideas and to engage students to participate to the Summer School of Code and Youth. It has been a blast! At the moment, we have finished to arrange all the educational details, as well organisational elements. Parents have been very satisfied! We look ahead!

Πρόσφατα η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή (ET 2020 New priorities) έχει συμπεριλάβει τον προγραμματισμό (coding) ως μία από τις αναγκαίες δεξιότητες που μπορούν να ενδυναμώσουν τον/την κάθε μαθητή/τρια και να τον/την βοηθήσουν να κατανοήσει, αλλά και να διαμορφώσει τον κόσμο στον οποίο ζούμε. Μέσα από τον προγραμματισμό αναδεικνύεται η σημασία πολλών άλλων δεξιοτήτων όπως η σαφήνεια, η λογική, η αναλυτική σκέψη, η επίλυση προβλημάτων, η δημιουργικότητα που συμβάλουν με τη σειρά τους στη βελτίωση των μαθησιακών αποτελεσμάτων άλλων μαθημάτων (π.χ. Μαθηματικά, Φυσικές Επιστήμες, Ξένες Γλώσσες, Μουσική κλπ.)

Ανταποκρινόμενο στα πιο πάνω, το Ευρωπαϊκό Πρόγραμμα Erasmus+ KA2 «CODE@YOUTH», στο οποίο συμμετέχει το Εκπαιδευτικό Κέντρο ‘Emphasys Centre’ και το οποίο εγκρίθηκε το περασμένο καλοκαίρι από τον ΟΝΕΚ (Οργανισμό Νεολαίας Κύπρου) με συντονιστή το Cyprus Computer Society (CCS), έχει σχεδιάσει ένα καινοτόμο προγράμμα για την εισαγωγή των εφήβων στον «κόσμο της πληροφορικής, του προγραμματισμού και της ρομποτικής».

Συγκεκριμένα, στο πλαίσιο του CODE&YOUTH διοργανώνεται το επόμενο καλοκαίρι ΔΩΡΕΑΝ ‘SUMMER CODING AND ROBOTICS SCHOOL’ για μαθητές από 14-16 χρονών. Το πρόγραμμα θα εφαρμοστεί παράλληλα σε 4 διαφορετικές χώρες: Κύπρο, Ελλάδα, Γερμανία και Ιταλία, από τις 26 Ιουνίου μέχρι και τις 7 Ιουλίου 2017. Στην Κύπρο το ΔΩΡΕΑΝ καλοκαιρινό αυτό πρόγραμμα θα διοργανωθεί στο Εκπαιδευτικό Κέντρο ‘Emphasys Centre’ (Λευκωσία) σε συνεργασία με τον Κυπριακό Σύνδεσμο Πληροφορικής (Cyprus Computer Society) και θα προσφερθεί σε δύο διαφορετικές ώρες (ομάδες μαθητών): Α’ Ομάδα 9:00-13:00 ή Β’ Ομάδα 15:00 – 19:00.

Εκτός από τα ΔΩΡΕΑΝ εντατικά μαθήματα προγραμματισμού και ρομποτικής, το καλοκαιρινό πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει: επισκέψεις σε πανεπιστήμια και σε εταιρείες για γνωριμία με τον κλάδο Πληροφορικής, συμμετοχή στο EU CODE&YOUTH Competition που θα διεξαχθεί στην Κύπρο τον ερχόμενο Οκτώβρη στο πλαίσιο του EU CODE WEEK και συμμετοχή αριθμού μαθητών σε εκπροσώπηση της Κύπρου στο εξωτερικό (Ελλάδα/Ιταλία) με πλήρη κάλυψη των εξόδων από το  Ευρωπαϊκό Πρόγραμμα.

What is coding worth in Europe’s future? Try 1 million jobs

Europe is currently facing a relevant shortage of ICT specialised workers projected to be 1 million within 2020.

Helping young people develop the ability to code, as well as a range of other ICT skills, is, therefore, becoming more and more important in Europe. To help achieve this, the Code & Youth project is undertaking activities to bring coding education to Europe’s youth. The project hopes that raising awareness of coding in younger Europeans will create a stronger base education for these individuals to get a leg-up in the labour market in the future. Introducing coding in a fun, hands-on way is also hoped to lessen the gender divide by encouraging girls to develop an interest and consider the field of ICT.

About the project

The Code & Youth project is a European project within the Erasmus plus framework (2016-2-CY02-KA205-000819). The project combines the knowledge of five partners from four European countries (Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy) to create an innovative methodology to support teachers and students in approaching coding and robotics for teenagers. The project plans to use programmable Edison robots, developed by Australian-based Microbric, to help teach teens more about coding and robotics in a fun, hands-on way.

The project is coordinated by Cyprus Computer Society, whose vice-president Andreas Loutsions is the coordinator of Code & Youth project. Partners of the project are, namely: A&A Emphasys Centre from Nicosi; the National Institute of Research “Demokritos” based in Athens (Greece) which is known for its 50 years of work in STEM fields; Culture Goes Europe (Germany), experienced in issuing Open Badges; and Futuro Digitale (Italy), known for its extended work in youth services and ICT education for young people.

The Code & Youth project is undertaking a range of ways to support teachers and students in coding and robotics, including:

  • Using an open badge system (developed by the Mozilla Foundation) to recognise what students have learned and track this learning through an e-learning platform focused on coding & robotics.
  • Organising a coding summer school for 100 young people between 14 and 16 years old in each partner country (forthcoming).
  • Working together on a 2-year project begun in 2016 culminating in a European coding competition and robot sumo battle in Nicosia in October 2017 using Edison robots.
  • Organising a national conference in each partner country, inviting important coding practitioners and attracting attention on existing coding initiatives for youth, as well as promoting the usage of robots like the Edison robot to make young people more interested in entering the program and learning new modules.
  • Offering innovative material produced for teachers and students freely available in different languages on the Code and Youth e-learning platform, which will also offer resources, links, and materials useful for ICT centres and decision-makers.

The project is excited to employ the open badge philosophy, making it easy to demonstrate how much students (or anyone) have learned together within a general framework of coding education. The system allows users to demonstrate their level of knowledge, as well as teamwork and student interaction with each other, which are elements schools do not often manage to include. The open badges will be made even more interesting through the project’s use of Edison robots, encouraging young people to program in teams and encouraging transversal competencies.

Both the Meet Edison team and the Code & Youth team are excited for the project, bound to help teenagers have an awesome summer school about coding.
